Get help BEFORE the recent event impact takes hold and alters your system and wellbeing. Watch a brief video here.

What if I don't do anything: Won't it just go away?

In short, not likely. The brain captures the data surrounding the event(s) and tells your system you are in danger. Depending on your history and your current processing capacity, your brain can get overwhelmed by the abruptness and quantity of important data. Your system may not be equipped to recover on it's own.

You, your loved ones and colleagues will start to notice your protective system activating with these symptoms:

  • Increased agitation, lower tolerance for new experiences & information
  • Increased startle and freezing response
  • Emotional and physical numbness (shock)
  • Flat affect (e.g blank facial expression, loss of personality and emotional flexibility)
  • Avoidance of event reminders and location; sleep escape, shut down
  • Hyper-arousal, push through, manic like energy bursts
  • Flashback, details of event popping up and activating you
  • Mood alterations
  • Time alterations (e.g suck in the event moment, not moving on)
  • Reduction in cognitive processing ability (e.g. forgetting)
  • Brain fog (e.g general lack of acuity and clarity)
  • Feeling Floaty or depixelated
  • Alteration in feelings of personal safety
  • Increase in scarcity thinking and living
  • Increased dependence on others for personal safety
  • Looped verbal processing, urges to explain the event repeatedly
  • Interjection of trauma reenactment
  • Interpersonal fatigue (low tolerance for others)
  • Survivors Guilt
  • Sleep and Rest Disruption
  • Decrease in self confidence and autonomy
  • Decreased physical agility (e.g. clumsy, vertigo-like)
  • Increased aches and pain, inflexibility, physical rigidity
  • Left unprocessed your brain will naturally generalize fear response details surrounding the event (e.g. time of year, location, people) resulting in phobic reactions of protection.

EMDR Recent Incident protocols help the brain to systematically process, or move, the data to a more adaptive state.

Waiting 30 days for a formal PTSD diagnosis may require more time in recovery work and increase the risk of compounding events that can escalate and expand symptoms.

Additional sessions may be needed. You will not need to recount or recall all the details of the event to get relief.

Important Note: if your incident is related to a crime/assault, please speak to law enforcement and your legal representation immediately regarding the need for a victim impact statement or video before treatment.
